C. VIBIUS C.F. C.n. Pansa Caetronianus, (48 B.C.), silver denarius, Rome Mint, (3.85 g), obv. mask of bearded Pan to right, below PANSA, border of dots, rev. Jupiter seated to left, laureate holding patera in right hand and sceptre in left hand on right side [C.VIBIVS] C.F.C.N downwards, and IOVIS AXVR upwards on left, dotted border, (S.420, C.449/1a, Syd 947, BMC 3978, RSC Vibia 18). Toned, slightly off centred, nearly extremely fine and rare.
Ex Dr V.J.A. Flynn Collection and previously from Noble Numismatics Sale 107 (lot 3570) and also coming from an old Hungarian collection. Formerly from the C. Pitchfork Collection and Spink Australia, November 4, 1977.
The moneyer was a Consul in 43 B.C., and the adopted son of C.Vibius C.f. Pansa who issued coins in 90 B.C. He used some of the types of his father for his issues. The mask of Pan refers to his cognomen Pansa.
