Pte Frederick Roberts, one of 25 Marine Light Infantry under command of Lt Lofts and the unit to be led by an officer on active service, namely Lt Alexander Gillespie, upon arrival in Hong Kong; Emb.08Aug1900 on SS Salamis; remained in China employed by the railway company being one of 17 NSW men from the Australian contingent to volunteer for important railway works in response to a call for volunteers from the military directors of the railways. He was formally discharged from the contingent and was to have his passage to Australia provided by the railways at the end of six months service.
