THE MOST EXCELLENT ORDER OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE, (type 2) Member (MBE) (Civil). Unnamed. In case of issue, this with foxing on lining, with instructions for wearing, uncirculated.

Wellesley Burgoyne Hudson MBE, MIE (Aus), was born on 11 May 1855 in Auckland, New Zealand. He was educated there at Wellington College and did his practical training in engineering with New Zealand Railways 1902-06. He then joined New South Wales Railways as a draughtsman.

During his time with the railways he worked as a surveyor and engineer. Some of his projects included working on a deviation of the Great Zig Zag Blue Mountains project that included ten tunnels; he was in charge of the quadruplication of the railway from Newcastle to West Maitland; also the remodelling of the wharves at Bullock Island and the building of the first electric power station at Newcastle. He was also in charge of deviations of the Picton-Mittagong and Mittagong-Bowral lines and quadruplication of the Sydenham-Hurstville line.

He supervised the construction of a new steel bridge over the Minnamurra River, strengthened the viaduct at Menangle and was supervising engineer in charge of the electrification of the Sydney suburban rail network. He was then appointed Assistant Chief Engineer for existing lines. He was elected a member of the Institute of Civil Engineers (Aus) in 1930. From 1932-48 he was Controller of Stores for NSW and for most of this time was a member of the State Coal Mines Control Board. He was Deputy Director of rationing during WWII and a member of the Commonwealth Business Committee. He retired in 1949 and became active in voluntary work as Chairman of Fairbridge Farm Schools Society of NSW, a member of the executive committee of the Standards Association of Australia and Chairman of St Luke's Hospital, NSW. He died in May 1963.
