Recommendation: Near Broodseinde on night 21st/22nd October 1917, a shell landed in the post where Private Ibbett was standing and killed his Platoon Commander and both his Platoon N.C.O.'s; this was within a quarter of an hour of relief by another Battalion. Pte Ibbett conveyed the news to his Company Commander and then volunteered to guide the incoming Platoon, hand over the Platoon post, and take charge of the Platoon coming out. This task he performed with great ability. This was a wonderful example of initiative displayed in time of stress by a Private soldier who had never before taken charge of men and one that served as a stimulus and inspiration to his comrades who had been for some times subjected to heavy shell fire in an exposed position.

For the same action also was Congratulated by Corps and Divisional Commander (AIF List 359 19/7/1918).
