The T.S.S.Athenia shipping liner was torpedoed without warning by a German U-boat on 3 September 1939, the first day that Great Britain declared war on Germany. This sinking was not within the international laws governing the conduct of war at sea as laid down by the Hague Convention at that time. The U-boat commander Lieutenant Fritz-Julius Lemp broke all rules of warfare and disobeyed his orders. He left without offering any assistance to the survivors and the whole incident was denied by German authorities.
