VICTORIAN HUMANE SOCIETY SILVER MEDAL, (1876), with Advance Australia coat-of-arms ribbon brooch bar, reverse of medal inscribed, 'Thomas J.Bennett 11 August 1876'. Toned extremely fine.

Ex John Chapman Collection, Noble Numismatics Sale 88 (lot 875).

Thomas John Bennett, ten year old schoolboy, Murchison, jumped into the Goulburn River at high flood with his clothes on to rescue his sister Susan, aged five, who was being carried out into the stream, depth of water about thirty feet. This medal was presented by the Right Reverend Dr Moorhouse, Bishop of Melbourne. Only twenty seven silver medals were awarded before the Victorian Humane Society became the Royal Humane Society of Australasia in 1883.
