THE SIR WILLIAM MACGREGOR MEDAL, undated (first awarded 1999), a trial essay prior to striking the first medals in 1998, in burnished pewter (60mm), by A.J.Parkes, obverse, facing bust of Sir William MacGregor, reverse, historic convict-built Commissariat Stores building now the headquarters of The Royal Historical Society of Queensland, with wreath at base. In case of issue, uncirculated.

Together with a brief history of Sir William MacGregor and also a handwritten card stating on one side that this is 'To Mervyn, A Trial Essay of the MacGregor Medal with many thanks for your generosity, from (illegible signature)', and on the other side, 'Prior to the striking of the First medals, in 1998.' This card and a medal were given to Major M.D.Cobcroft OAM, RFD (Retd), one of the sponsors of the medal.

In 1999 The Royal Historical Society of Queensland began awarding the Sir William MacGregor Medal for exceptional and outstanding service in the promotion of Queensland history. It is named in honour of the Society's first patron.
