HOLBORN RESTAURANT ESTD 1874, presentation medal in bronzed lead (69mm) (BHM 2990; Eimer 1640), obverse, interior view of restaurant with ribbon scroll in exergue and die struck 'Presented By The Proprietors' and inscribed, 'To Tom Simpson Esq./Sep 29th 1894', reverse, interior view of restaurant with guests standing between columns. Nearly extremely fine.
Ex Colonial Auctions Australia 3 June 2006 (lot 898) with their lot card and included on reverse are buyer's handwritten research notes.
Holborn Restaurant at 218 High Holborn, Central London was opened as a restaurant in 1874. Previously it had been a casino, swimming bath and dance hall. It was expanded in 1883 and again in 1885 and then redecorated by T.E.Colcutt in 1896. Often visited by the Prince of Wales, it consisted of an Empire Grill, a large restaurant with facilities for dancing and a cabaret. It also had several private dining rooms, 14 smaller restaurants and three Masonic Temples.
