CHINA, Empire, Sinkiang Province, made into a red seal box from a silver "Sungarei" Dollar, nd (c.1898), type struck by Otto Beh of Esslingen, Germany, (26.8 g), 40.05mm (Kann 1031; L&M 829). Very fine and extremely rare, soldered, making a lid and with a solid base height 21mm.

Recent research reveals that the Sinkiang "Sungarei" dies were made using generic punches and hubs in common with the Anhwei, Chekiang, Fengtien and Heilungkiang series of dies manufactured by Otto Beh during the period 1897-99. As a total of 260 dies were made, not counting the rejects, the wear and tear on the punches and hubs explains the softness or lack of details on some of the patterns of the above series. The smaller denominations of the Sungarei series have been found in heavily circulated condition. We do not feel comfortable enough to guarantee the originality of this coin, so potential buyers bid on this item from their own knowledge without an original guarantee from this company on its complete authenticity.
