GROUP OF FIVE: 1914-15 Star; British War Medal 1914-18; Victory Medal 1914-19; War Medal 1939-45; Australia Service Medal 1939-45. 72 Pte S.Ellmer. 10 Bn. A.I.F. on first three medals with a weak 1 in 10 on first medal, S955 S.Ellmer on last two medals. All medals impressed. Swing mounted, cleaned and some contact marks on second medal, otherwise very fine.
Together with a pair of oxidised bronze Australia shoulder titles; a photo of uniformed Sam Ellmer on a post card with short note from him pencilled on reverse in 1917; Entitlement to War Gratuity memorandum dated Sep 9 1946.
The above trio appear to be official replacements. On 29 May 1941 Sam Ellmer applied for a replacement WWI Trio as he had lost the original medals when moving house on 25 July 1940 and he completed a Statutory Declaration to attest to his claim.
The 10th Battalion was one of the first units raised in Australia during WWI with recruits from South Australia. It took part in the Gallipoli Landing on 25 April 1915 and its members penetrated the furthest inland of any Australian troops during the initial fighting.
Samuel Ellmer, builder's labourer, age 23, born at Bolton, Lancashire, England; Enl.19Aug1914 at Morphettville, Sth Aust with previous service in 19th (County of London) Bn; Emb.20Oct1914; WIA 02May1915 GSW neck, Gallipoli; AWL 06-07Mar1918 - forfeit 9 days pay and again 07-22Mar1918 - forfeit 28 days pay; in hospital with VD 25Mar-04Apr1918; WIA (2nd occasion) 10Aug1918 shrapnel wound face and right arm, France; AWL 11-15Oct1918 - forfeit 4 days pay; 11Nov1918 granted 75 days leave with pay in England (Special 1914 leave); married at Shoreditch Registry Office in London on 11Dec1918 to Caroline Beech, age 23, a beer barrel washer; RTA 23Jul1919; Disch.06Aug1919; WWII: Enl.25Jul1940 at Wayville, Sth Aust; he accused his wife of adultery and desertion and then re-married 14Mar1942 (Dorothy May Carlyle); Disch.30Dec1943 as Pte ex 9 Aust Infy Training Bn; Died 24Jan1960.
