SOLD $500

YEMEN, antique silver woven belt, late nineteenth century, (183cm long, 635g), both ends are secured with decorative finials, one end finishing in a loop and the other a hook so that the two ends can be linked together. Very fine.

The 'dowry' belts were made by the Yemeni women and were designed to wrap around the body several times, the longer the belt and the greater the number of times such a belt went around the body was an indicator of the wealth of the woman and her family.
