Lieut S.P.Layborn was a 2nd (Special Service) Battalion Officer in the Anglo-Boer War. He is recorded on the roll of the Royal Canadian Regiment of Infantry B Coy (London). After serving in the war in South Africa Lieut Layborn had to wait a long time for the issue of his clasps. In an official letter dated 30 January 1902 from Ottawa he was advised as follows. 'You appear to be entitled to the best combination of clasps of any member of your contingent. It is such a good one we are unable to complete the set, not having a spare one of the 'Relief of Kimberley' (this was later issued to him on 16 March 1905 after additional supplies had been received from England)'. In other correspondence reference is made to his clasp entitlement but there is no mention of the Belfast clasp.
