FRANCE, Carolingian, Louis the Pious, (814-840 A.D.), silver denier. Swiss Frontier region (known as a 'German Sachsenpfennig'), posthumous issue struck in the name of Louis the Pius, late 10th Century A.D. obv. cross pate quartered, with pellets, rev. temple, a cross within, (Roberts 1236, Gariel 44.40). Crinkled, fine and scarce.
