QUEEN'S SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL 1899, (type 3 reverse). Orderly H.Pope. Imp: Hosp: Corps. Impressed. Original poor condition ribbon, medal nicely toned extremely fine.
Orderly Henry Pope confirmed on nominal roll of Imperial Hospital Corps. Enl.15Apr1901; Disch.16Oct1901.
Henry Pope of Lawrence, New Zealand and an inaugural member of the Tuapeka Brass Band was presented by his fellow bandsmen with a gold sovereign case in early March 1901 prior to his departure for Durban, South Africa with another resident of Lawrence, namely John McNab. Both had completed their apprenticeships, McNab as a carpenter and Pope as a painter. When they arrived they were both offered jobs in their respective trades but preferred to try military life. John McNab joined the South African Light Horse but Henry Pope's defective vision prevented him joining that unit so he joined a medical unit.
