GROUP OF SIX: Military Cross (GRI); Queen's South Africa Medal 1899 (type 3 reverse) - two clasps - Cape Colony, Orange Free State; 1914-15 Star; British War Medal 1914-18; Victory Medal 1914-19; Yorkshire Imperial Yeomanry, 3rd Battalion South Africa 1900-1901, silver tribute medal. 589 Pte G.S.Taylor 9th Coy.3rd Imp.Yeo on second medal, Capt G.S.Taylor North'D Fus on third, Major G.S.Taylor on fourth and fifth medals, 589 Major G.S.Taylor on sixth. First medal unnamed, second to fifth impressed, last medal engraved. Mounted on card, very fine.

MC: LG 17/9/1917, p9586 to T/Capt (A.Maj) George Stamp Taylor R.E. - 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on several occasions, one notable instance being when he was in charge of a large 'Labour Company' working party engaged in constructing light railways. By his coolness and presence of mind they were conducted out of the shelled area without any casualties, although the bombardment was intense. He subsequently displayed very great gallantry in personally digging out men who had been buried by shell fire and in cutting trenches across No Man's Land under very trying conditions, in which he set a very fine example of energy and courage under fire.'

George Stamp Taylor (1876-1942) obtained his technical training at Faraday House and with John Fowler & Co as well as at Leeds Corporation Electricity Works. He served in the Boer War and was a prisoner at Swartzkopteftn 20/4/1900. He returned to Leeds after the war where he was employed in the Corporation Electricity Department as Assistant Mains Engineer before joining the North Eastern Railway Co in 1902. In WWI he served in the Northumberland Fusiliers, attaining the rank of Major. In 1919 Taylor moved to New Zealand as the representative of Reyrolle Ltd and later transferred to Sydney as their Manager for Austrlaia and New Zealand. On retirement he returned to New Zealand where he died on 30th May 1942.
