PAIR: British War Medal 1914-18; Victory Medal 1914-19. Lieut. C.W.Scott. A.I.F. Both medals impressed. First medal nearly uncirculated, second medal with irregular toning, otherwise very fine.

Charles William Scott, clerk, age 21, born at Malvern, Vic; Enl.01Feb1916 at A.I.F. Recruiting Depot at Town Hall, Melbourne, with previous service of 1 year in Senior Cadets and 4 years in Militia; to A/Cpl 25May1916; L/Cpl 29Feb1916; to 2Lt 01May1917; to be Lieut 07Sep1917; detached for duty to AFC 18May1918; joined No.1 School of Military Aeronautics at Reading for training as Flying Officer (Pilot) 07Jun1918; Died in an aeroplane accident at No.5 Training Squadron, Australian Flying Corps, Minchinhampton Aerodrome, Chalford, Gloucestershire on 28Aug1918; Buried at Leighterton Cemetery, Leighterton, Gloucestershire with full military honours including firing party, and bugler and many beautiful wreaths from various sources including AIF HQs, Officers and Cadets, NCOs and various men from Minchinhampton, and the deceased's friends acted as pallbearers.

Lieutenant Scott was flying an Avro 504K whilst a pupil under instruction by 2/Lt Roy L.Cummings of 6 Training Squadron. Unfortunately, due to his inexperience, he turned into an Avro Le Rhone whilst the machines were flying at right angles to each other at about 1,000-1,500 feet above the ground causing both aircraft to crash to earth. Lieutenant Scott suffered a fractured skull and was found dead about 5 yards from the wreckage in a field at Lowesmore Farm in Sapperton as was 2/Lt Cummings who also had a fractured skull and was found under the wreckage.
