CIGARETTE CASE, in sterling silver (80g), engraved, "Chief Engineer SS Karsik, from Edward & Peter"; tobacco case, in brass "K.P.M" below crown, in centre; badge, in shape of an anchor, "ER" in centre with encrusted stones. Very fine. (3)

The SS Karsik was built for the German shipping company DDG Hansa in 1938, used by the Dutch shipping company KPM Netherlands in the Dutch East Indies, took refuge in Australia after the fall of Java and became an istrumental supply ship for Buna, which was the conclusion of the Kokoda track in Papua New Guinea during World War II.
