THE DESERT WORLD, by Arthur Mangin, 1872 revised edition, The Scenery, Animal and Vegetable Life, and Physical Character of the Wilderness and Waste Places of the Earth, hard cover (17x24cm), 624pp, with 160 b&w illustrations, includes a chapter on 'The Australian Interior', sticker on inside of front cover with printed and hand written details, 'Model Public School/Presented To (Sarah Parton)/For Proficiency In/(Needlework)/A.Dadley, (1st Prize)/Sewing Mistress'. Front cover loose and some early pages with edge tears or slight loss of paper at edge, foxing, otherwise good and scarce as a school prize.
The book was awarded as a prize to Miss Sarah Parton at the annual exhibition of needlework of the Model Public School at Fort Street in Sydney held on Thursday 18 December 1873. There were performed various songs and readings during the exhibition and much of the needlework elicited very general commendation.
