QUEEN'S SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL 1899, (type 3 reverse). W.C.French, P.O. 1st Cl: H.M.S.Sybille. Impressed. Hairlines and a few small surface marks, otherwise good very fine.

Petty Officer 1st Class W.G.French confirmed on roll of H.M.S.Sybille. The Sybille was lost during bad weather on 16 January 1901 when she struck a reef near the farm at Steenboksfontein about five kilometres south of Lamberts Bay. Fortunately there was only one casualty. Her guns and various other pieces of equipment were salvaged during the following few days.
