GREAT BRITAIN, South African War, National Commemorative, Medal 'The Absent Minded-Beggar' 1900, in silver (45mm), obverse, soldier holding rifle, inscription around, reverse, union flag and palm branch tied to a staff decorated with a rose, thistle and shamrock, inscription in eleven lines, around 'The Queen God Bless Her. Daily Mail. Kipling Poem.' (BHM 3680, Eimer 1851, Fearon 351.7). With box of issue gold blocked on lid 'The Absent Minded Beggar Medal', extremely fine.

These medals were sold by Spink & Son with the proceeds going to the Daily Mail Kipling Poem War Fund to assist the widows and orphans resulting from casualties in the South African War.
