THE MAYORS PRIZE, fob medal in gold (9ct; 3.89g; 26x27mm), by WHH, ring top suspension, obverse inscribed, 'R. McNiven', reverse inscribed, 'The Mayors Prize/Instituted by/Alderman J.W.Spooner/1902.'. Fine.
Together with two riband bars for 1939-45 Star; Africa Star; and Defence Medal 1939-45; War Medal 1939-45; Australia Service Medal 1939-45.
The Mayors Prize was instituted by Mayor, Alderman J.W.Spooner, with the donation of money to buy two prizes, one for the best boy in the Lithgow Superior Public School and another for the best girl. The awards were being put forward by him as a form of commemoration of the Coronation year. The prize ceremony was held at the Lithgow School of Arts on Friday 19 December 1902. The best boy, Ronald McNiven, chose to receive a gold medal suitably inscribed and called 'The Mayor's Medal'.
