INDIA, Post-Mauryan (Punjab) Kunindas, Amoghabuti (c.150-80 B.C.), silver drachm, 17mm, (2.46 g), obv. legend in Brahmi (Great King Amoghabhuti of the Kunindas), deer standing right with raised head, to right goddess Lakshmi standing facing, holding long-stemmed lotus in her right hand and placing left on hip, rev. same as obverse legend, six-arched hill with triatana above, swastika and split standard (Indra-dhvaja) on the left and tree in railing to right, serpent or wave symbol below, (JONS 218, fig.42, AICR 1144, HGC 12, 850). Toned, good very fine, rare.
Purchased privately on June 9, 1983. Similar examples in Noble Sale 125 (lot 3622) realised $240, another in Leu Numismatik Web Auction 13 (lot 648), 15 August 2020 realised 889 CFr. (@$1000 US).
The Kunindas were a native Indian dynasty on the foothills of the Himalayas. Their coinage showing a standing deer next to Lakshmi (the goddess of wealth, knowledge and spiritual enlightenment).
