BITHYNIA, Kingdom of, Nikomedes III Euergetes, (127-94 B.C.), silver tetradrachm (15.62 g), dated 192 BE (106/105 B.C.), struck at Nikomedeia. obv., diademed head to right of Nikomedes II, rev. Zeus Stephanephoros standing left holding wreath and sceptre, to inner left, eagle standing left on thunderbolt, above complex monogram above BQP (date), to right and left **BASILEWS, EPIFANOUS NIKOMHDOU*. (cf.S.7274, cf.Callatay p.58 [only one example knowm with this monogram, SNG Fitz. 4135 (different monogram), HGC 7, 645). Dark with attractive patination, good very fine and very rare.
Ex CNG Auction 50, June 23, 1999 (lot 800), coming from the Collection of Dr. Cornelius Clarkson Vermeule III (1925-2008) with his ticket.
He was an American scholar of anciet art and numismatics, and the curator of Classical Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and authored many scholarly works. Considered by many to be one of the most important numismatists of the 20th century.
