LYCIA, Myra, as a member of the Lycian League, (167-100 B.C.), silver drachm, (2.58 g), obv. laureate head of Apollo to right, bow and quiver over shoulder, rev. kithara, M - Y, above **LUKIWN*, winged kerykeion (caduceus) to left, all within incuse square, (cf.S.5311, Troxell ANS MN&M 58, 34, SNG Cop.-, SNG von Aulock -, Leu 7, [lot 256]). Toned, extremely fine and rare.

Troxell lists only 7 plinthophoric drachms of Myra with the winged caduceus mintmark. Myra was located at the mouth of the river Myros; it was one of the six largest cities of Lycia. In late antiquity it came to promminence as the bishopric of St. Nicholas.
