AUSTRALIAN POLITICAL CHECK, Vote For Hollis, in bronze (22.5mm), no maker, pierced at top for suspension ring, obverse, bust of Hollis facing left. Very fine.
Mr Robert Hollis was an engine driver who emigrated from England to Australia and was a founding member of the Labor party in 1891. He was elected to the NSW Legislative Assembly in 1901 as the Labor member for Newtown-Erskine. He remained a Labor backbencher until he was expelled by the Political Labor League in November 1916 for supporting conscription. In 1917 he ran for the seat again but as a Nationalist. Unfortunately for him, he was beaten soundly by the Labor candidate, Frank Burke. He died at Ashfield in 1937.
