GROUP OF FIVE: The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Member (MBE) (Military type 2); 1939-45 Star; Pacific Star; War Medal 1939-45 with MID; Australia Service Medal 1939-45. First medal unnamed as issued, VX117497 H.H.Smith on all other medals. All named medals impressed. Contact marks on last two medals, otherwise extremely fine.
MBE: LG 14/2/1946, p942; CAG 21/2/1946, p408 to WOI Henry Hartley Smith, 14/32 Infy Bn. Citation: Consistently valuable services in New Britain. Presented by the Governor-General at Parliament House, Melbourne on 16 March 1949.
Recommendation: For consistently valuable services and great devotion to duty. During the period in New Britain from Oct 44 to Mar 45 WO Smith has continued to fill the posting of RSM 14/32 Aust Inf Bn - a posting he has held for nearly three years. He has at all times set a high standard of discipline and loyalty to the WOs and NCOs of the Bn to whom he has been an inspiration. Despite his age (42) he never faltered during six arduous months of constant moving and patrolling culminating in the capture of TOL; his unfailing cheerfulness, his calmness under great stress, his efficient office administration and personal hard work were of the greatest value to the Bn in carrying out its tasks.
