USA, EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE INTERNATIONALE, Paris (France), 1878, prize medal in gold (82.9g; 50mm), by J.C.Chaplain, obverse, laureate bust of France left, reverse, Victory holding a wreath and trumpet above a scene of the exhibition buildings, to right, Cupid holding aloft a plaque stamped in relief, 'Philadelphia and/Reading Coal and Iron Co'. With minor test cut on obverse between the 'A' and 'I' of Francaise, otherwise extremely fine.

The Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company was founded in 1871 and was the largest producer of anthracite coal in the USA until the 1920s.
