MACEDON, Kingdom of, Demetrios Poliorketes, (294 - Autumn 288 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (16.51 g), Amphipolis Mint, struck 289-288 (Autumn), obv. diademed and horned head of Demetrios to right, dotted border, rev. Poseidon standing to left, holding trident, right foot on rock, on right, **BASILEWS*, on left side **DHMHTRIOU*, to left monogram, **DR* monogram to right, dotted border, (cf.S.6764, Newell Series VI, type 124, dies CXXVII/264-266, cf.Pl.XIII [same obverse die], cf.Pozzi [1921 sale], No.96, HGC 3, 1014.b [S]). Bright, some surface roughness, otherwise very fine and very scarce.
Ex Freeman & Sear, December 4, 2003 and part of a hoard of 250-300 coins examined by Arthur Houghton and Cathy Lorber with a very few of this ruler, notes by them on ticket attached.
