SYRIA, Kingdom of, Seleucus I, (312-280 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (17.02 g), Seleucia I (first workshop SC attribution), c.300-296 B.C., obv. head of Herakles to right wearing lion skin with dotted border, rev. Zeus seated on throne to left, Nike in outstretched hand, **SI* to left to right **SELEUKOU*, in exergue **[BA]SILEWS, (cf.S.6830, SC 119.6a, Newell WSM 1346, [p.240, pl.LII, 11], HGC 9, 16f [S]). Good very fine, very rare variety.
Ex Noble Numismatics Sale 81 (lot 3281), previously from the Dr. Colin Burnside Collection, and that from Noble Numismatics Sale 57 (lot 966).
Newell knew of only one example of this type and for all varieties of this mint for this ruler, three examples, no examples in Coin Archives.
