SCOTLAND, Etal Games, Prize For Wrestling, 3d Octr 1844., in silver (58.5mm), no maker, tiered ring top suspension, reverse inscribed in the centre, 'Given/By/Lord F.Fitzclarence/in the presence of /H.R.H. the Duke/of/Cambridge.', and around the bottom, 'To John Hall'. Very fine and rare.
Etal Tillside Games were instituted in 1836 in imitation of the St Ronern's Border Games at Innerleithen in Scotland. They were patronised by the Right Hon. Lord Frederick FitzClarence, the Right Hon. The Earl of Errol, the Right Hon. Lord Ossulton M.P., and the Most Noble the Marquis of Douglas. In the wrestling contest the winner had the choice of a handsome silver medal or one pound (quite a large amount of money in 1844). John Hall obviously preferred to accept a medal presented by royalty.
