BEN XIV PON M A XVII, capped bust right, wearing stole; pellet stops, rev. Holy Mother Church seated facing on clouds, holding model of church and keys, MDCCLVI around, (CNI XVI 323; Muntoni 51; Berman 2743) (illustrated); others silver grosso (3) various types, (Berman 2746, 2759, 2763). First coin good fine, others very good - fine. (4)

Born into a noble family in Bologna, Benedict XIV was known for his reforms in the education of priests along with his views concerning the presentation of the Church to native or foreign cultures. He supported the custom of utilising Christian terminology for the purpose of relating one cultures religious views to those of the Church, such as the New World or the Far East. He also spoke out against the mistreatment and enslavement of inhabitants in these areas.
