ATTICA, Athens, silver tetradrachm, (168-167 B.C. or 136-135 B.C. revised date), (16.81 g), obv. head of Athena Parthenos to right, wearing triple crested Athenian helmet, ornamented with Pegasos, dotted border, rev. owl standing right, head facing on prostrate amphora, to left an upright club lion skin with bow in case, **A QE across, on left side across API, to right side across in two rows HPA **STOF* on the amphora letter **D* in field to right across **POLUM*, below amphora HP, all within olive wreath, (cf.S.2555, Thompson (331d), 332c [same obverse die, probably reverse die of 332c, p.133], specimen in Athens, HGC 4, 1602). Nearly extremely fine/extremely fine and very rare.
Ex Gorny & Mosch, Munich, November 8, 1995 as a direct purchase.
Type represented in Thompson 'The New Style Coinage of Athens' as No.331d (same dies). Thompson reports 84 known tetradrachms of club, lion skin and bow in case type from 12 obverse and 56 reverse dies. There is a difference of 32 year less between Thompson and the suggested revised chronology. This would make this issue 136-5 B.C.
