GROUP OF SIX: 1939-45 Star; Africa Star; Pacific Star; Defence Medal 1939-45; War Medal 1939-45; Australia Service Medal 1939-45. QX4046 F.Tonge. All medals impressed. Swing mounted, contact marks, otherwise very fine.

Together with matching set of swing mounted miniature medals; riband bars for first two medals, last four medals, and another for first three medals but this out of order; small personal diary for the year 1942 with almost every page entered in ink and in a khaki cloth cover marked 1942, the diary entries mention the fall of Singapore, the bombing of Darwin, Tobruk, the sinking of Hermes in Ceylon and the Italian POWs mingling with Aussie troops in camp at Palestine and other happenings; two booklets of the Allied Geographical Section, Southwest Pacific Area, one issued 9th February 1943 titled 'The Native Carrier, Employment and Treatment of Native Carriers in New Guinea', the other issued 12th February 1943 titled 'You And The Native, Notes for the Guidance of Members of the Forces in their Relations with New Guinea Natives'; government pamphlet accompany medals confirming medal entitlement; leather purse for holding various items.

Frederick Tonge, French polisher, age 31, born at Birkenhead, England; Enl.22Oct1939 at Kelvin Grove, Brisbane, Qld; to training camp at Liverpool, NSW and then Ingleburn, NSW; AWL on 28Jan1940 and again on 13Mar1940; Emb.04May1940; while en route stopped at Cape Town, Sth Africa and again caught AWL; Arrived England and Emb.14Nov1940 for Middle East; AWL again 14Feb1941; to Greece 30Mar1941; fought in Battles of Vevi, Damour and Larisa; slightly wounded and then reported missing 24Apr1941 later found; admitted to VD hospital 07Aug1941; RTA and Disemb.07Aug1942; Emb.15Sep1942 for Port Moresby; Detached to 13 Aust Field Regt; RTA 12Dec1943 by RAAF and admitted to 1st Australian Orthopaedic Hospital at Toowoomba, Qld; Disch.19Apr1944 as Medically Unfit; Died in 1986 at Brisbane, Qld.
