A.I.F. on third medal, 3145 Sjt. A.Clayton. M.M. 49-A.I.F. on last medal. All medals impressed. Very fine - extremely fine.
Together with a Memorial Plaque named to Archibald Clayton, in fold over cardboard packet of issue; Memorial Scroll named to Serjt. Archibald Clayton M.M 49Bn.A.I.F. with accompanying note from King George V.
MM: LG 9/12/1916, p12055; CAG 19/4/1917, p927, to 3145 Corporal Archibald Clayton, 49Bn.
Recommendation: This N.C.O. was buried twice by shells exploding in his vicinity, and though considerably shaken each time refused to go to the rear and stayed in command of his section. He did excellent work during the whole time and his example tended to inspire his men.
Archibald Clayton, butcher, age 25, born at Reading, Berkshire, England; Enl.06Sep1915 at Brisbane, Qld in 10Rfts 9Bn, with 2 years service with Berkshire Imperial Yeomanry; Emb.05Oct1915; TOS 9Bn 21Jan1916 at Tel-el-Kebir; Trf to 49Bn 25Feb1916; to L/Cpl 01Mar1916; to France 05Jun1916; to Cpl 24Aug1916; to Sgt 06Sep1916; to hospital with influenza 30Nov1916 and further hospitalisation and convalescence until 16Jan1917; KIA 07Jun1917 at Belgium and is commemorated at the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial in Belgium.
