TRAJAN, (A.D. 98-117), an issue in honour of his deceased father, silver denarius, Rome mint, struck in 115 A.D., (2.98 g), obv. laureate bust of Trajan, draped on far shoulder to right, around IMP TRAIANVS AVG GER DAC P M TR P COS VI P P, rev. Trajan senior seated left on curule chair, holding patera and sceptre, around DIVVS PATER TRAIAN, (S.3323, RIC 252, RSC 140, BMC 500). Light grey patination, extremely fine, rare.
Trajan's father was governor of Syria and was mentioned by Pliny as decorated with the Parthian laurel, probably as a consequence of a triumph by Vespasian. He was promoted to proconsul of Asia. A marble monumental stone was found dedicated in 79 A.D. recording this. By 100 A.D., he was no longer living and was deified prior to 115 A D by his son.
