MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION, 1880, in gold (39mm; 51.32g) (cf C.1880/18), by H.Stokes, edge inscribed, 'Major M. Clementi - For Services'. Hairlines, an edge nick and gold test mark on edge, otherwise good extremely fine.
Ex Noble Numismatics Sale 80 (lot 626) and Spink Australia Sale 14 (lot 357).
Major M. Clementi, Executive Commissioner of the Straits Settlements, and retired from the Bengal Staff Corps was the representative at the exhibition for Singapore, Penang, province Wellesley and Malacca, the states which comprise the Straits Settlements. Prior to entering the army he was an English barrister and in that capacity did some little practice in Sydney where he also made an unsuccessful attempt to start a daily newspaper.
