MILITARY GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL 1793-1814, - eight clasps - Talavera, Busaco, Albuhera, Ciudad Rodrigo, Badajoz, Pyrenees, Orthes, Toulouse. Stephen Lomas, 48th Foot. Impressed. Medal and clasps dark toned, small edge bump at left side, otherwise extremely fine.

This medal was not awarded until thirty two years after the end of the war and only to those who applied for it in person. Despite this over twenty five thousand people applied for this campaign medal to recognise their service.

Stephen Lomas (also recorded as Lomax) appears on 2Bn, 48th Foot muster rolls at various countries and locations and on 24 July 1815 was promoted to Corporal. He was then promoted to Sergeant on 25 February 1817. The 48th Foot proceeded to New South Wales 25 March 1817 and arrived on 24 June 1817. Lomas appears to have arrived on 11 April 1818 on the Guildford with a shipment of convicts. He was promoted to Colour Sergeant on 4 July 1818 and then on 21 December 1818 he was reduced to Private. On 25 December 1821-24 March 1822 he was at Liverpool, Sydney, NSW and 25 June-24 September 1822 he was at Parramatta, Sydney, NSW. On the roll he, along with a number of other men, was listed as 'Supernumery to the Establishment' since 25 July 1822. He continued service with the 2nd in NSW until 24 March 1824 at which time he transferred to 3rd regiment continuing service in NSW until 24 May 1824. There are no further entries on the roll. Stephen Lomas was discharged 14 November 1824.
