GREAT BRITAIN, 20th (East Devonshire) Regiment of Foot, 1830-55, officer's shoulder belt plate in gilt, with matted back plate. Very fine.

The 20th Regiment of foot was raised in 1751 and was redesignated 20th East Devonshire Regiment of Foot in 1782. During the Napoleonic Wars the regiment fought in several campaigns before serving with distinction in the Peninsular War. At the Battle of Vitoria they formed part of the backbone of the Duke of Wellington's forces. During the Crimean War they took part in two major battles at Alma and Inkerman.
