GROUP OF FIVE TO PILOT MIA: 1939-45 Star; Air Crew Europe Star; War Medal 1939-45; Australia Service Medal 1939-45; Bomber Command Medal, an unofficial issue. 402948 A.G.Grand on first four medals, P.O. Grand A.G. 402948 on last medal. The first four medals impressed, the last medal engraved. Display mounted, some spotty toning and sweating on third and fourth medals, otherwise good very fine - extremely fine.

Ex Colonial Coins and Medals in October 2013^^Together with Female Relative's badge (WWII), by G&E Rodd 1944, numbered 56014, with one star.^^Albert George Grand, clerk, age 20, born at Brisbane, Qld; Enl.11Nov1940 at No.2 Recruiting Centre, Sydney, NSW and appt to 2 I.T.S. Lindfield; reclassified LAC and remustered as Air Crew 04Jan1941; to RCAF 21Mar1941 for training; awarded 'Wings' 02Jul1941; to Sgt 04Jul1941; Emb.16Jul1941 from Canada for England; various training units then to RAAF 460 Sqn 29Dec1941; to T/Flt Sgt 04Jan1942; to commissioned rank of Pilot Officer 30Jun1942; MIA at sea on air operations 04-05Aug1942; Wellington bomber was never found; Plt Off Grand was on his 12th mission having flown against such targets as Essen, Stuttgart, Saarbrucken, Bremen and Duisburg; report of the incident - 'In crew of Wellington Z 1422 which were detailed to carry out an operational sortie on the night of 4 August 42. The aircraft left the base at Brighton, Bubwith, East Yorkshire at the appointed time and since then nothing has been heard of either the aircraft or the crew.'; the body of one of the aircrew, Sgt T.C. Hobgen was washed ashore on the coast of France near the small town of Port Ivy about 3 1/ 2 miles north west of Quiberon and buried there; Albert George Grand is commemorated at the Runnymeade Memorial, UK.^^With copy of Service File and other documents as well as a b&w photo of a Wellington bomber.
