AUSTRALIA, WWII, POWA (Post Office Women's Auxiliary), badge in gilt and enamel (23x25mm), by Handford, pin-back. Good very fine.

The Post Office Women's Auxiliary (POWA) was formed in 1940 and made up of women employees of post offices across the country to supplement the men's group, the Post Office Volunteer Guards, to protect vital lines of post office communications during the war. Members of POWA were trained in first aid, home nursing, air raid precautions, Morse operating and other postal duties normally performed by men so they could take over in an emergency.
