LESBOS, Mytilene, c. 521-478 B.C., electrum hekte (2.55 g), Bodenstedt dates 497 B.C., obv. head of roaring lion to right, rev. incuse head of calf to left, (S.4240, Bodenstedt 12, Boston MFA -, BMC 123, SNG von Aulock 1687 and 7721, HGC 6, 937). Well centred, extremely fine and rare.

Bodenstedt notes only 13 examples of this spectacular type from 4 obverse dies. Many examples known are in published collections of the variety lacking the obverse letters.
