CYCLADES, Ceos, Koressos (Coressia), silver stater, c.510-480 B.C., (11.97 g), obv. Sepia or cuttlefish overstruck on a sea turtle (tortoise according to E.S.G. Robinson) type of Aegina, rev. large incuse square with five incuse and three raised compartments, (cf.S.3051, Sheedy Series II, No.1 [p.166, Pl.3] [This Coin]; Weber 4641 [p.558, Pl.168], [This Coin]; Traite 2, 1 1910 [pl.LXI, 1], SNG Cop. 637, de Hirsch 1396, Pozzi 2018, BMC 48, Boston 1289, HGC 6, 570 [R2]). Excessively rare, toned, good very fine/very fine.
Ex J.P. Lambros (in 1887) Collection; acquired by Sir Herman Weber Collection (4641) Illustrated, and then the Virgil Michael Brand Collection (1861-1926), purchased by present owner from Sotheby's, London 1st February 1984 (lot 147).
Another example in the Copenhagen Collection is also overstruck on an Aegina stater together with an example from Series II in Athens from the Myrina Hoard.
Lot includes owners descriptive ticket within a flip.
