MILITARY CROSS, (GRI), reverse inscribed, 'Lt E.J.H.Schlitz/38th Battn. A.I.F./Warneton/10.2.18. Swing mounted, ribbon damaged, otherwise toned good very fine.
Entitled to British War Medal 1914-18 and Victory Medal 1914-19.
MC: LG 22/4/1918, p4836; CAG No 150 24/9/1918, p1864, to Second Lieutenant Ernest John Hugh Schlitz, 38 Aust Infy Bn.
Recommendation: 'Near Warneton during a raid on the enemy trenches on 10th February he displayed conspicuous courage and devotion to duty whilst acting as OC Assault of the Left Party. Although wounded he refused to leave his post until compelled by weakness and loss of blood and even then insisted on walking to the dressing station in order to save a stretcher for a badly wounded man. Throughout the whole of the training and preliminary reconnaissance his courage and ability were of a high order.
Strength of raiding party 9 officers and 195 other ranks.'
Ernest John Hugh Schlitz, State school teacher, age 27, born at Quambatook, Bendigo, Vic; Enl.05Dec1915 at Bendigo, Vic, with previous service of 1 1/ 4 years in 17LHR; to Sgt 10Apr1916; Emb.20Jun1916 with 38Bn; to France 22Nov1916; to Officers Cadet Course 05Jul1917; to 2Lieut 01Nov1917; to Lieut 01Feb1918; WIA 10Feb1918 GSW legs, France; awarded MC 07Mar1918; WIA 12Aug1918 GSW left arm, France; RTA 18Dec1918; Appt terminated 14Apr1919 Medically Unfit; Died at Boronia, Victoria on 24Jul1941 and buried the next day at Fern Tree Gully Cemetery.
