Case Number: 382

On 25 July 1913, after an explosion had taken place at the Soltar Works, Freeman's Bay, Auckland, John Patrick Culhane, 34, who was a stranger to the place and who had been warned not to enter the burning building owing to other explosions which were liable to take place, insisted on making an attempt to rescue the deceased, William Branton Massey, 28. Culhane climbed over burning tins of Soltar to get to the man Massey, and owing to the sulphurous fumes he suffered excessive vomiting and inflamed eyes for several days. (Courtesy - Wills p257).
