Queen Victoria School for Maori Girls was opened on 6 April 1903. It was proposed to establish an Anglican boarding school for Maori Girls in Auckland as a memorial to Queen Victoria who died in 1901. The cause was championed by Lady Ranfurly, wife of the Governor, and Reverend FA Bennett travelled the country promoting the idea. The foundation stone was laid by the Duchess of York on 12 June 1901 (later Queen Mary). Money for the school was raised by donations, subscription and through bazaars, also the government funded 20 scholarships.
