AMERICAN LADIES HOSPITAL SHIP FUND, S.S.Maine, Bernard N.Baker Esq, 1899, in white metal (44mm), obverse, crossed U.S.A. and U.K. flags behind a lifebuoy with cross in centre, reverse, side view of S.S.Maine.
Hairlines and minor edge nicks, otherwise nearly extremely fine.

The S.S.Maine, originally the Atlantic Line steamer Swansea, renamed in 1899 and lent to the British Government by the president of the Atlantic Transport Coy, Bernard N.Baker, for use in the Anglo-Boer War. The ship was fitted out in London by Messrs Fletcher & Son and Fearnall Ltd. It was later used during the Boxer Rebellion.
