CRIMEA MEDAL 1854-56, - two clasps - Alma, Inkermann. Serjt Richd Dunckley (sic, see footnote), 23rd Regt. Impressed. Hairlines and some small edge nicks, otherwise nearly extremely fine.

Note: Richard Dunckley's name is spelled Dunckley in some research and Dunkley in others, and this conflict of spelling also occurs on various websites, however his name is spelled as Dunkley on the 23rd Welch Fusiliers Memorial.
Richard Dunkley (Dunckley), Enl.30Aug1849 in 23rd Foot Regt (known as Royal Welch Fusiliers) at Dublin when he was 17 years of age; to Cpl 07Jul1850; to Sgt 12Aug1851; served in Crimea; at Inkermann on 05Nov1854 Sgt Dunkley was lying severely wounded in front of the 5 Gun Battery when Sgt William Coleby led a party of five bandsmen who successfully carried Dunkley to the rear. As a result of this act Coleby applied for the award of the Victoria Cross, but this was refused him. Despite his rescue Richard Dunkley did not survive his wounds; Richard Dunkley is commemorated on the 23rd Welch Fusiliers Memorial erected of Portland stone at Carmarthen, a county town in Wales, at the time considered to be the spiritual birthplace of the Regiment.
With research including colour photos of the memorial at Carmarthen.
