MILITARY CROSS, (GVIR) (GRI type), with pin-back ribbon suspender. Lieut Hugh Henry Main Australian Military Forces 1945. Engraved. In Royal Mint case of issue, toned extremely fine.

MC: LG 8/3/1945, p1304; CAG 15/3/1945, p650, to NX14840 Lieutenant Hugh Henry Main, 2/17th Australian Infantry Battalion.
Recommendation: This officer throughout his service has consistently shown notable qualities of leadership and devotion to duty which were especially marked in the operations at Lae and Finschhafen. His sound military judgement, tactical knowledge and qualities of command have been reflected in the work of his company which acquitted itself very well whenever it was in contact with the enemy. During the advance against Finschhafen his company was ordered to hold a position on the Satelberg Road and to prevent the enemy moving by that route against our flank. With his company Lieut Main for several days withstood several attacks by the enemy on whom it inflicted heavy casualties. Frequently his communications were cut by enemy patrols which necessitated his acting entirely on his own initiative. In subsequent operations he showed the same vigour and self reliance. Lieut Main is an original member of his battalion having joined as a private. All his work has been marked by a conception of duty in keeping with the highest traditions of the service.
