CARACALLA, (198-217 A.D.), silver denarius (3.23 g), struck in 216, obv. ANTONINVS PIVS AVG GERM, laureate head to right, rev. P M TR P XVIIII COS IIII P P, radiate lion walking left, carrying thunderbolt in mouth, (S.6844, RIC VI 283c; BMCRE 178; Hill 1550; RSC 367). Toned, extremely fine, and rare.

The radiate lion symbolizes the Emesan solar diety and religion to which the imperial family had ties through Julia Domna. It would attain much greater significance in Roman society under the rule of Elagabalus.
