48TH REGIMENT OF FOOT NORTHAMPTONSHIRE MEDAL 1814, reverse inscribed, 'Nivelle,/Orthes,/Toulouse.', with brooch bar suspender. Inscribed naming on the obverse to D.Crampton (sic, said to be Crompton but on service records name appears to be Crampton). Original ribbon with some damage, some edge nicks, otherwise good very fine.

Entitled to Military General Service Medal 1793-1814 with three clasps - Nivelle, Orthes, Toulouse.
David Crampton (Crompton) born in Oldham, England in 1871; Oldham was the centre of the hat manufacturing trade in England during the industrial revolution and Crampton became a hatter; Enl.01Apr1813 in 48th Foot; along with his fellow recruits he bolstered the ranks of Wellington's army for its push into France and he participated in the battles of the Peninsular War at Nivelle, Orthes and Toulouse; the 48th Foot then proceeded to Ireland in 1814 for garrison duties; in Apr1817 the 48th Foot embarked on transport ships Matilda, Lloyds and Dick for service in the new colony of New South Wales; Pte Crampton saw garrison service in Sydney and Parramatta until Dec1821 at which time he proceeded in Captain Allman's company to the newly established penal settlement of Port Macquarie; Pte Crampton served out the remainder of his tour at Port Macquarie until he joined his regiment in India in 1825; he returned to England on the convict ship Charles Kerr in 1835; Disch.18May1836 as an Outpensioner after 23 years of service, worn out and unfit for future service; he was assessed on discharge as 'a good and efficient soldier'; he returned to civilian life residing at Lords Hill, Oldham and resumed his trade as a hatter; in 1829 at the age of 48 he married Nancy Schofield in his parish church, St Mary's, Oldham; Died in his home town of Oldham on 18Sep1852 at age 61; Buried 21Sep1852 at St Mary's Church, Oldham.
